  1. Embroidery is the art of decorating cloth 
  2. with a needle and thread. It includes 
  3. broderie anglaise, gros point, and petit 
  4. point, all of which have been used for the 
  5. adornment of costumes, gloves, book covers, 
  6. furnishings, and ecclesiastical vestments. 
  7. The earliest embroidery that survives in
  8. England is the stole and maniple (a
  9. decorative strip of silk worn over the arm),
  10. found in the tomb of St Cuthbert in Durham
  11. and dating from 905. The Bayeux Tapestry is
  12. an embroidery dating from 1067-1070.
