Embroidery is the art of decorating cloth
with a needle and thread. It includes
broderie anglaise, gros point, and petit
point, all of which have been used for the
adornment of costumes, gloves, book covers,
furnishings, and ecclesiastical vestments.
The earliest embroidery that survives in
England is the stole and maniple (a
decorative strip of silk worn over the arm),
found in the tomb of St Cuthbert in Durham
and dating from 905. The Bayeux Tapestry is
an embroidery dating from 1067-1070.
